A baby asparagus shoot in my backyard |
Last year I greatly amused N by gasping audibly and repeatedly while checking my asparagus pots one morning. True, you would think I would have adjusted to the surprise by the fourth, or fifth, or sixth pot, but in the moment (for me) each tiny little shoot was an exciting surprise. It's good, then, that he wasn't around to hear me yesterday when I spotted the spears sticking up out of my new backyard asparagus box. Four thick, handsome spears, one already grown to supermarket size in - I think - a single day.
Okay, they're a little thin for the supermarket, but about three times thicker than this time last year. So exciting!
