Our Bowls Runneth Over
If you've been watching the harvest notes you may have noticed that the tomatoes are coming in! Despite giving some away to friends and family and eating them at will, we are swimming in tomatoes. I am finally beginning to understand the carefree generosity of many gardeners when it comes to produce. Tonight's goal: sauce!

Golly-gee-whiz those tomatoes look incredible! I wish I was closer to take a few off your hands...
ReplyDeleteOh, I'm SOOOOO jealous!! You know how I've tried for tomatoes a few years now - with no success... To me, tomatoes and corn and the only two things that taste TOTALLY different from a garden than from a store or even a farmer's market. Wish I was there to sink my teeth into one. I bet Kevin would trade you some home made bread for some tomatoes. He just informed me that he has run out of all perishables.
ReplyDeleteI am also quite jealous. My tomato plants are full of green tomatoes - so full I've considering cooking techniques for green tomatoes - but none are ripe. What am I doing wrong?! Could I convince you to post images of your healthy tomato plants at different times of day (to get sunlight info)?
ReplyDelete@Tracy - My tomato plants get full sun from sunrise until about 6pm. Too little sunshine could cause your tomatoes to ripen slowly, or maybe you planted yours later? Or it could be that the variety you planted matures later? Sorry, I rarely seem to get the camera out to the community garden and the tomatoes seem to be heading downhill right now. But "full of" seems to be a good sign. Are you pinching off any suckers that grow? If your conditions are marginal that may help the plant focus on ripening.
ReplyDeleteI discussed your tomatoes with my aunt today and she is surprised that anyone can grow tomatoes in the DC area. She also wants your secrets to tomatoes!
ReplyDeleteI killed my tomato plant - all the leaves brown near the green tomatoes before they can turn red so I dug it up. Other parts of the plant were still living but it was clear there was no way to beat whatever disease was causing the leaves to brown. I have something *close* to full sun. I don't pinch off anything but will try that in the future. What do you do to your soil? I wonder if soil is the secret.
