More Berry Picking and Jam

Last weekend I went berry picking with a group of friends. We got some blueberries, raspberries, and beets. R ate a LOT of berries. The rest of the blueberries went in the freezer (more this year than last year, since I ran out in January). I made one batch - about 4.5 quarts - of raspberry jam, and still had enough of them to freeze 1 and 1/2 big bags.

I freeze berries by laying them out in a single layer on a big cookie sheet. This year I used freezer paper to line the cookie sheet, but I don't think it's really necessary.

Making jam is a lot easier than I always thought, and so delicious! I use the recipe that comes in the pectin box, and wait until my toddler is asleep for the night. Normally I would try to make the jam right away for freshness, but this time I happened to see a weather report that told me if I would just wait four extra days it would be 15 degrees cooler! (And the weather report was correct!) MMMMMMMMmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

  1. Oh, yum. I have high hopes that my mother will pick some blueberries for me. (Which I'll then have to bring back on the plane.) I don't think berries grow in the Miami climate.

  3. Oh, but tomatillos and mangos and citrus fruits do! And you don't even have to preserve them because there is no barren season there!
